What is the Northern Ireland Community Archive?

The Northern Ireland Community Archive is an innovative new web portal that aims to increase access to the rich diversity of Northern Ireland’s heritage and enable communities to create their own online archives celebrating their cultural heritage.

The website uses the latest technology to enable people to share their memories and experiences. Communities can upload photographs, documents, audio and video footage onto a cross-searchable database, and create online exhibitions drawing together a story from the records in the database.

The website also provides access to some of the fascinating and varied collections held in our museums and archives.

Communities involved in developing an online archive are supported by a network of museums and archives, which can provide training and advice in all areas of collecting and interpreting heritage and publishing material on the internet. If you would like to get involved, simply
email us

Belfast City Council is committed to building a strong cohesive city and recognises that shared histories and community memories are a key mechanism to deliver value to our citizens, now and in the future.  Community archives are a tool which brings together our histories, makes sure they are sustainable and makes them available as widely as possible for now and for generations to come.
